Shelf labels measuring 70mm x 38mm are designed for use in scanner rails—the familiar price rails attached to the front of shelving units. A paper weight of 120 gsm has proven to be the ideal thickness; it prevents the back of the scanner profiles from showing through, and the A4 sheets can be processed (printed) using standard inkjet printers, laser printers, or copiers.

Occasionally, barcodes on product packaging cannot be scanned; however, the required code can still be quickly scanned from the shelf label or scanner rail.
