Dangerous goods labels for shipping batteries (lithium-ion or lithium-metal)

As a standard option, CUNU offers a blank version where you can manually enter the UN number and telephone number; the labels can be written on or stamped. Alternatively, we can print the fully completed labels with all details included; in this case, please select the appropriate UN number for your batteries and provide the telephone number you would like us to print.

The dangerous goods label for shipping lithium batteries or lithium-ion batteries must comply with specific regulations and requirements applicable both internationally (e.g., UN, IATA, ADR, IMDG) and nationally in Germany. The label is designed for safety and indicates potential hazards associated with batteries, particularly regarding the risk of fire or explosion.

Dangerous goods labels for shipping lithium batteries must meet the criteria mentioned above, including the minimum size of 120 mm x 110 mm, the red border, the emergency contact number, and the hazard symbols. This labeling is essential for safe transport and the protection of personnel handling the package.

Mandatory specifications for dangerous goods labels in detail:

• Minimum label size: 120 mm x 110 mm
• It is important to adhere to this minimum size to ensure readability and visibility.
• Color specifications: The label must be in color; the red border, in particular, is mandatory.
• Upper part of the label: A symbol depicting a damaged or exploding battery, often accompanied by a flame or lightning bolt to illustrate the potential hazards of lithium batteries. Textual notice: A warning statement containing wording such as: "Caution! Lithium batteries. May be dangerous if damaged." The text indicates that the batteries may only be transported under specific conditions. Emergency telephone number: A telephone number for obtaining information in the event of an incident. This number must be clearly visible on the dangerous goods labels.

UN number:

• Specific UN numbers are used for the shipment of lithium batteries: UN 3480: For lithium-ion batteries (not installed in equipment).
• UN 3481: For lithium-ion batteries installed in equipment or packed with equipment.
• UN 3090: For lithium-metal batteries (not installed in equipment).
• UN 3091: For lithium-metal batteries installed in equipment or packed with equipment.

These UN numbers must be clearly visible on the dangerous goods labels or on the packaging.

Symbols and notices:

• A warning symbol depicting either an exploding battery or the general dangerous goods symbol.
• Sometimes a "Caution" sign or a flame symbol is displayed to indicate the risk of fire.

Affixing the dangerous goods label: The label must be securely attached to the outside of the shipping package, preferably in a way that prevents it from being easily torn off or damaged.
