22x12 mm "best-before" labels are used to display the minimum shelf life date and therefore feature the printed text "best before:". According to food labeling regulations, this text must not be abbreviated; i.e., notations such as "MHD" or "min. best before:" are not permitted. 22x12 mm labels are the smallest size that allows the text "best before:" to be displayed clearly and legibly. A compatible 22x12 mm labeler then prints the variable date onto the label.
